Left 4 Dead 2 – Banned in Australia!

Aussie Classification Board cites “realistic, frenetic and unrelenting violence” as cause for zombie game ban down under.

So, most of us are excited about the upcoming release of Left 4 Dead 2 in mid-November, but some of us, namely Australians, aren’t so lucky. The Australian Classification Board, has decided that this first person shooter exceeds maximum rating of MA 15+ (although the maximum for film is R18).

This announcement means the title is now illegal to sell, rent, or promote within Australia.

The ban was confirmed by a spokesperson from EA, but did not mention anything about the possibility of and edited resubmission – “We’re still working through the submission process…we want to explore all opportunities before we can make a comment.”

The original Left 4 Dead game was labelled the maximum MA 15+ rating

Official ruling from the Classification Board:

“The game contains realistic, frenetic and unrelenting violence which is inflicted upon “the Infected” who are living humans infected with a rabies-like virus that causes them to act violently”

“However, it is the use of the “melee” weapons such as the crowbar, axe, chainsaw and Samurai sword which inflict the most damage. These close in attacks cause copious amounts of blood spray and splatter, decapitations and limb dismemberment… or even cause intestines to spill from the wounds. As well as locational damage where contact is made to the enemy which may reveal skeletal bits and gore.”

“In conclusion, the Board finds that the “interactive nature of the game increases the overall impact of the frequent and intense depictions of violence. This coupled with the graphic depictions of blood and gore combine to create a playing impact which is high.”

This report later, also said “A minority of the Board is of the opinion that the violence is strong in playing impact and therefore warrants an MA 15+ classification with the consumer advice of strong violence,” which suggests this decision was not completely unanimous across all of the Board members.

  1. Yes, I saw this report earlier. Funny how they’re report of how horrible it is sounds like a feature list off in a video game magazine.

“Melee weapons? Locational Damage? Realistic Injuries?! This game has it all!”

  2. Lol the classification board makes it sound even better 😀

  3. what’s with European countries and they’re censor laws? btw zarn, great sourcing!! you found the original document for this.

this kind of news really pisses me off. yeah it’s violent but this game ISNT MARKETED TO MINORS!! so why are they regulating it like it was?? people need to get off their high horse and stop looking at things like games and comics as “JUST FOR KIDS”. all mediums are now matured, even 3D movies are (finally) starting to go adult (9, advent children, etc). it’s fucking rediculous and incredibly insulting to the gaming culture. they think we’re babies and will go on a kill spree after playing these games.
THE IS NO CONCLUSIVE EVIDENCE THAT GAMES CAUSE ANY LONG TERM AGGRESSION!! infact did you know that since GTA3 was released youth violence in the USA has steadily been going down even today? Im not saying games are causing this, but i am saying with 100% certainty that this stat PROVES games is not having a negative effect on society.

what we need to do is to clear out USA’s, and all of Europes rating boards, fuck them, fire them, fucking execute them for crimes against humanity (they are stunting our cultural growth, and limiting artistic expression which is also limiting our freedom of speech). in their place we should put in CIRTIFIED psychologists and sociologist to rate entertainment. these people have MUCH more insight and a much mroe objective view on what may or may not have negative affects on society.

if you guys want to see an EXCELLENT example of unjustified consor boards. i highly recommend watching “This Film is Not yet Rated”
it’s an excellent example of how unprofessional, and bais censor boards can be. every one should watch this…. REVOLT WITH ME!! LET”S START A REVOLUTION!!
